Can I upgrade Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP to Windows Server 2003?

A client OS such as Windows 9x/Me/2000Pro/XP cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2003. You can however dual boot Windows Server 2003. Here is a list of supported upgrade path.

The following Operating Systems can be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition:

  • Windows NT 4.0 Server (SP5 or above)
  • Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server (SP5 or above)
  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Windows Server 2003 Beta3/RC1/RC2 Standard Edition *

The following Operating Systems can be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition:

  • Windows NT 4.0 Server (SP5 or above)
  • Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server (SP5 or above)
  • Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition
  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
  • Windows Server 2003 Beta3/RC1/RC2 Enterprise Edition *

The following Operating Systems can be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition:

  • Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition
  • Windows Server 2003 Beta3/RC1/RC2 Datacenter Edition *

The following Operating Systems can be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 Web Edition:

  • Windows Server 2003 Web Edition
  • Windows Server 2003 Beta3/RC1/RC2 Web Edition *

The following Operating Systems can be upgraded to Windows Small Business Server 2003:

  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Windows Server 2003 Beta3/RC1/RC2 Small Business Server *
  • Small Business Server 2000
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003

* It is not recommended to upgrade from beta code to RTM code.
