The shutdown button at the logon screen is disabled, how do I enable it?

The shutdown button is disabled by default because it makes it harder for unauthorized people to turn off a server. You can however enable it by following these steps:

  • Click Start->Run and type mmc
  • Click File->Add/Remove Snap-in
  • Click Add, find Group Policy Object Editor, click Add, click Finish, click Close and click OK
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\
  • Find the policy Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to logon.
  • Double click the policy and change it from Disabled to Enabled

Note: There is now no need to logon to the server to be able to shut it down. Keep this in mind if you also enable Remote Desktop on the server, because everyone able to do a Remote Desktop connection will be able to shut it down!
